Positive Change Begins at Home

FAQS With James McGrath

Who is helped by Art Therapy?

Art Therapy is effective with children, beginning at age 4, and adults with a wide range of difficulties or disabilities. These may include psychological, emotional or behavioral problems, learning disabilities, physical disabilities and neurological conditions. Art Therapy also works well for those who are at risk for out-of-home placement, preparing for adoption, adjusting to adoption or foster care, or experiencing a high degree of conflict at home or in society.

Do you need to be artistic to benefit from Art Therapy?

No special artistic abilities are needed for art therapy to be successful.

Do parents participate in the process?

Parents are included in each session so that communication is clear and open, and problems are addressed immediately. This team approach helps the child to learn that changes can be positive and nurturing, and this, in turn, helps him to develop and succeed. The child learns that he can manage his feelings instead of being overpowered by them. He learns that he can be a success at home and then will take that success into the world.

What happens in a session?

As a child or adult client begins to make art certain themes emerge. Unconscious themes may produce feelings, reactions or associations that can be explored. The artwork provides a springboard for conversation or storytelling that brings up important feelings relating to the individual. Each step in the process brings more clarity to the therapy sessions and helps to shape a plan for treatment.

How long does treatment last?

The length of treatment is as unique as each individual, however factors to consider include: frequency of sessions, severity and number of problems being addressed, achievement of predetermined goals, general sense of positive, lasting change within the family unit, desire to go to a deeper level of personal growth, or a desire to respond from a place that is not trauma based.

Is financial assistance available?

I accept FAPT funding, State funding, and self-pay arrangements for all services. I do not accept Medicaid. I do not bill private insurance. Some insurance companies may provide limited coverage for in home therapy. Please contact me if you have questions about funding for services. I do my best to make my services available to those who can benefit.
